Gytheio
Set in the Gulf of Laconia, Gytheio (also known as Yithion) is the seaport of ancient Sparta, and was an important port for many centuries before being destroyed by an earthquake in the 4th century. An included excursion takes you to Mystras, the famous ruined Byzantine city on the Peloponnese Peninsula set high in the Taïyetos Mountains, famed for it’s 14th-century frescoes. Mystras was built as a religious shelter and a defensive retreat – the defensive walls still stand. It was ruled by relatives of the Byzantine Emperor until the fall of the Empire.
