Itinerary

Day 1 — Embarkation Day in Longyearbyen

Your Spitsbergen adventure begins when you board your ship in Longyearbyen, the island’s largest settlement. As you embark, you’ll get great views of the mountainous landscape that serves as a backdrop to this seaside settlement.

Days 2 to 10 — Exploring Spitsbergen

We sail around this magical island, on a constant search for wildlife. Your expedition will cover western Spitsbergen as well as some stunning fjords and outlying islands to the north. From polar deserts to immense glaciers, the natural landscape here is just as varied as the wildlife.

Each expedition presents new opportunities, so we have no fixed itinerary, however we do have some favorite destinations, including 14th of July Glacier, Smeerenburg, Phippsoya, Alkhornet and the Hinlopen Straight.

The destinations visited on your voyage will be selected for optimum wildlife viewing and appreciation of the history and geology of Spitsbergen. Polar bear viewing is almost guaranteed, with Phippsoya being one of their preferred hunting areas and the towering cliffs of Alkefjellet providing many free bird egg meals for both them and the Arctic fox. Torellneset and Phippsoya are great places for walrus photography. Coming across a walrus haul-out is a moment you won’t forget either. These lumbering giants of the Arctic create quite a noisy scene, as each walrus vies for a choice spot of coastline.

If you’re itching to get a little closer to the action, then taking a sea-kayaking excursion to some of the more isolated pockets of Spitsbergen is highly recommended. Smeerenburg is a great place for an optional snowshoeing excursion (on selected voyages), as you can visit a memorial erected in 1906. This historical site remembers the whalers who lost their lives in the 17th and 18th centuries while working in extreme Arctic conditions.

There is no shortage of natural beauty in Spitsbergen. The tundra can be surprisingly colorful in summer, with wildflowers bursting for a taste of sunshine. Each day you’ll see something new, whether it is a rare bird species or an abandoned hut from centuries ago.

Day 11 — Disembarkation Day in Longyearbyen

The time to say goodbye has come. Your adventure ends as it began, in the frontier-style settlement of Longyearbyen. From here we’ll transfer you to the airport for your flight home.

Ports

Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen (lit. Longyear City) is the largest settlement and the administrative center of Svalbard, Norway. As of 2008, the town had a population of 2,040. Longyearbyen is located in the valley of Longyeardalen and on the shore of Adventfjorden, a bay of Isfjorden located on the west coast of Spitsbergen. Since 2002, Longyearbyen Community Council has had many of the same responsibilities of a municipality, including utilities, education, cultural facilities, fire department, roads and ports. The town is the seat of the Governor of Svalbard. It is the world's northernmost settlement of any kind with greater than 1,000 permanent residents.

Spitsbergen

Spitsbergen (formerly known as West Spitsbergen; Norwegian: Vest Spitsbergen or Vestspitsbergen)[1][2][3] is the largest and only permanently populated island of the Svalbard archipelago in northern Norway. Constituting the westernmost bulk of the archipelago, it borders the Arctic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea, and the Greenland Sea. Spitsbergen covers an area of 39,044 km2 (15,075 sq mi), making it the largest island in Norway and the 36th-largest in the world. The administrative centre is Longyearbyen. Other settlements, in addition to research outposts, are the Russian mining community of Barentsburg, the research community of Ny-Ålesund, and the mining outpost of Sveagruva.

Since 1991, we have specialised in polar expeditions. Our base camps are ships purpose-built for high latitude cruising. As the leader in polar expeditions, we offer unparalleled technical expertise, leadership and passion for polar adventure.  We have the largest and most diverse fleet of passengers ships in the Antarctica operated by one entity. We deliver more departures and a greater variety of itineraries than any other company. We have the only helicopter-equipped, polar-class icebreaker outfitted for expeditions in Antarctic waters - Kapitan Khlebnikov. Out travellers come from around the world - Europe, Asia, Oceania, North America and Africa. They share a preference for travel to remote wilderness areas.

Many of our Expedition Team members have decades of experience in the Arctic and Antarctica. They understand ice conditions and the impact of weather on ships and helicopters. They are experts in polar history, marine biology and glaciology. They drive the zodiacs for ocean-level cruising. Our Captains and their officers and crews are skilled at navigating through pack ice under extreme conditions. Our Hospitality Team can prepare meals and pour beverages during gale force winds. You will not find a more capable team.

From its launch in 1991, the people who are Quark Expeditions have combined the spirit of adventure with a deep sense of environmental responsibility and a strong desire to educate others about the wonders of the polar regions. Making the Arctic and Antarctic accessible to people who previously could only dream of setting foot there is our pleasure and passion.
