Ports

Dakar

Senegal is a land of vast open plains dotted with baobab trees that extend to the horizon. Its history has been turbulent; contact with the West destroyed the coastal kingdoms of West Africa as English, French and Dutch adventurers vied for control of the slave trade in the 16th century. Control of Senegal passed to the French, who made Dakar the center of their West African colonial empire. Dakar, capital of Senegal, is the major trading center of West Africa and has a population of approximately three million.

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is well suited for the outdoor lifestyle, boasting sports such as sandboarding, kiting, surfing, swimming, angling, sailing, golf and other in- and outdoor sport codes.

During the December holidays Walvis Bay and its surrounding resorts come to life as beach sports, events and entertainment draw thousands of visitors, who want to wind down and soak up the sun. During this time anglers flock to the coast to catch some of the best quality and largest edible fish in Africa. These include steenbras, kabeljou, snoek and other delicious varieties.

The Dolphin Park and Long Beach resorts attract many visitors who choose to stay close to the ocean with the luxury of well-equipped accommodation and facilities. Tour operators offer various tour packages whether by quad-bike, off-road vehicles, sea excursions or scenic flights by plane.

Undoubtedly amongst the most famous desert landmarks in Namibia is Dune 7, one of the highest crests in the dune belt along the coast. With picnic sites and shaded with palm trees the dune is a popular sand-boarding haunt, while simply climbing to the top to see the view is an adventure on its own. The coastal dunes are popular with para-gliding, sand-boarding and quad biking enthusiasts.

Luderitz

It is almost unreal to find a complete German village in Africa, including Lutheran churches, delicatessen shops and coffee houses. Almost everything is in German style. Penguins and seals live on the coast nearby and flocks of flamingo and ostrich use the empty beaches as their home. The diamond-rich Sperrgebiet (forbidden area) is immediately south of Luderitz. It is the diamonds that keep this town's prosperity up.
