Alaid Volcano
Russkiya Bay
A backdrop of 300 volcanoes would indicate a masterpiece of major geographic proportions. Some 29 of these are active, producing steam, lava, and dramatic eruptions. Whilst cruising the southern coast, we are watching for seals, brown bears, large colonies of breeding slaty-backed gulls and horned puffins.
Arriving in Russkaya Bay we can clearly see the debris and power of Kamchatka’s volcanoes, with pumice scattered on the shoreline. Early we cruise into the fjordland of steep, tall granite cliffs that are over 1,000 feet (300 meters) high . Ashore, exploring the coastal forest, a birding opportunity reveals species such as the Eurasian nutcracker, taiga flycatcher, and red-flanked bluetail. We continue to watch for shy Kamchatka brown bears on the shoreline and Steller’s sea eagles the worlds largest raptors, circling above.
Petropavlovsk
Petropavlovsk is the administrative, industrial, scientific, and cultural center of Kamchatka Oblast (Russia). The city itself has more people than its neighboring regions Magadan Oblast, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, and Koryak Autonomous Okrug, making it the largest by far in the far northeast. The city is situated on high hills and surrounded by volcanoes. In fact, the horizon cannot be seen clearly from any point of town as volcanoes and mountains are everywhere.
