Kiel Canal

The Kiel Canal[n 1] is a 98-kilometre (61 mi) long freshwater canal in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The canal was finished in 1914 and links the North Sea at Brunsbüttel to the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau. An average of 250 nautical miles (460 km) is saved by using the Kiel Canal instead of going around the Jutland Peninsula. This not only saves time but also avoids potentially dangerous storm-prone seas.

Sweden really intended only to pledge Wismar to the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin for a period of 100 years - but it turned into a couple of years more. The former Hanseatic city is one of the major attractions in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, which is in no small part due to its wonderful Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Neat Baroque and Classical buildings line up next to one another around the large marketplace, and the six monumental brick churches of the city offer a fantastic cross-section of the various sacred architecture styles of the former Hanseatic cities.
